Frontier ups California service

(05-02) 13:29 PDT DENVER, (AP) --

Frontier Airlines said Tuesday it will begin nonstop service between San
Francisco and Los Angeles next month, the first point-to-point service in
California for the low-cost carrier.

The new service will be offered five times daily beginning June 29,
Frontier said.

"We feel strongly that the San Francisco market is underserved for
high-value, low fare service and there is clearly a strong business and
leisure connection between these two cities," said John Happ, senior vice
president of marketing and planning for Frontier.

The Denver-based airline said it is hiring 40 new employees in Los Angeles
for a total of 70, and more than 40 will be hired in San Francisco.

WN couldn't make it because it screwed up its schedule. WN has, on average, 25 minutes turnarounds. F9 can allow for the unstable weather at SFO because it has longer turn times.

To say the route is underserved by a "high-value, low fare service" airline is stupid. The flight is only a little bit over an hour in length. Five flights a day is a small number of flights when you consider the number of flights UA has on the route. Additionally, OAK is actually quicker to get to from downtown San Francisco so I don't think F9 will draw too many passengers away from OAK and the WN service there.

What prevents UA from matching or even undercutting F9's fares? I think
it's foolish. We'll see an announcement in a few months declaring that
F9 is throwing in the towel.

WN makes a run of it all the time, just not to SFO itself. F9 has focused their Bay Area service on SFO and is going to full a full F9 station (no outsourced handling) so it makes sense financially.
