Airbus To Test New Wingtip Devices For Single-Aisled Jets
Wednesday February 15, 4:38 AM EST

Edited Press Release PARIS--Airbus (ABI.YY) said Wednesday that it is studying new wing tip devices for its single-aisle aircraft. Wing tip devices are designed to improve wing aerodynamics and thus reduce fuel burn. Two different new wing tip device types will be flight-tested on Airbus's A320 development aircraft in March. In addition, JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU), the New York-based low-cost carrier, will also provide an aircraft for part of the flight test programme. Winglet Technology LLC, located in Wichita, Kansas, will provide one of the winglet designs for testing. With the advent of more sophisticated analysis techniques, in particular in the context of A380 development, Airbus recently reviewed the application of more advanced methodologies to the A320 Family wing. This allows Airbus today to consider the application of new wing tip devices. if ((typeof tag336_1) == "function") { tag336_1();

During a series of flight tests in the coming months, a large set of parameters will be recorded. Depending on the outcome of a thorough analysis of the results achieved, Airbus will decide later this year on the way forward. Airbus is a European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. (5730.FR) joint company with BAE Systems PLC (BA.LN).

These "wingtip devices" are not particularly new, only new to Airbus. They
are actually blended winglets very similar to those on the 737NG family.

I'm surprised didn't offer winglets on its A320 line sooner given the
ever upward rise in oil prices. I know one JetBlue aircraft will be
involved in the testing, at least.

Actually, it is B6 that has been pushing Airbus to get winglets on the A320.
As it is, the A320 Family doesn't have as much range as the 737NGs and that
delta only expands with the winglets. This will close the gap a bit and also
allow B6 to stop taking weight restrictions on the BUR-JFK route.
